By The Monkey Puzzle Tree in Collaboration with Print Maker Alexis Snell in Ocean Blue
The Monkey Puzzle Tree collaborated with Alexis Snell, who specialises in lino cut prints. This print subtly pushes a message about humankind’s impact on the planet and explores the juxtaposition between the natural and industrial world. Flocks of swallows morph into aeroplanes and factory fumes mingle with skulls and snakes.Â
Alexis sketched the design, before hand-carving into lino block which was printed by hand. This pattern was then screen-printed onto bespoke cotton-linen fabric a heritage mill in Cumbria.Â
“I really liked the idea of translating one of my designs into a different medium,” says Alexis, whose children’s book The Bear in the Stars was the starting point for ‘All Tomorrow’s Futures’. “We wanted to create a modern version of the Willow Pattern in which the design tells a story. As an artist, I can’t make that much difference to climate change, but what I can do is create images that make people think about what’s happening to our planet. The name refers to the fact that the future of our planet could go in two different ways. We’ve got to act now to prevent disaster.”Â
This print is available in three colourways, all monochrome colours, to highlight the simplicity of the original lino print.Â
