Van Gogh was a great admirer of Japanese art. He wrote that it made him happy and cheerful. This wallpaper is from His painting ‘Flowering Plum Orchard’ Paris Oct-Nov 1887  is based on the painting ‘Plum Garden in Kameido’ by Utagawa Hiroshige. Van Gogh accurately reproduced the composition but made the colours much more intense.
